Webcam Settings and iMovie
Several users asked me about iMovie support. iMovie does not support external USB UVC camera by default, I wrote a small utility for Webcam Settings users to enable that.
Webcam Settings iMovie Enabler (WSiE)
WSiE Requirements
- Mac OS X 10.6
- Mactaris Webcam Settings
- Apple iMovie '11 (version 9.0)
- USB UVC webcam
The trick to make iMovie '11 recording 16:9 widescreen HD format - use QuickTime Player to help switch between 4:3 and 16:9!
QuickTime Player allows you to choose 3 levels of recording quality.
Medium Quality, QuickTime Player sets Logitech HD Pro Webcam C920 to 4:3 at 640x480 resolution.
High Quality, QuickTime Player sets C920 to 16:9 at 1280x720 resolution.
Maximum Quality, QuickTime Player sets C920 to 16:9 at 1920x1080 resolution.
While switching different recording quality in QuickTime Player, you will notice resolution is switched in iMovie's video import window as well. This way you can control iMovie's recording resolution.
Can't get it to work Logitech C910 in iMovie. WSiE won't install, says iMovie not found, but it is definitely on my iMac.
ReplyDeleteWhich version of iMovie are you using? Please email me at mactaris@mac.com, I will be able to respond more efficiently by email.
DeleteThanks so much for this app! Really helped to get me unstuck. Blessings to you!

WSIE requirements are OS X 10.6 which I got, but iMovie'11 needs at least OS X 10.7... so WSIE will not work under OS X 10.6. Will it?
ReplyDeleteiLife '11 which includes iMove '11 works on Mac OS X 10.6, this is how I tested WSiE under Mac OS X 10.6 and iMovie '11.
DeleteiLife '11 is still available on Amazon for less then US$50, the only issue is you won't be able to update iMovie '11 to the latest version. Looks like iMovie '11 (9.0.4) is the last version supports Mac OS X 10.6.
I just wanted to say THANK YOU for creating this combo of products and making it available to us. I was tearing my hair out trying to find a solution for my simple web blog when I upgraded to a Logitech C920. I am on OSX 10.8.3 with iMovie '11 and am able to work directly in iMovie to record, and use Webcam Settings to tweak colors, pan, zoom, and more. I am thrilled.
ReplyDeleteDo you know any reason why in iMovie the C920 would only film in what looks like 3:2 aspect ratio, and not 16:9? Is there any way to control this in iMovie so that I get widescreen HD? Thanks!
Select menubar in iMovie, File > New Project... > Aspect Ratio: to "Widescreen (16:9)"
DeleteAfter that iMovie allows me to record at 16:9 from my C920. Please email me and let me know if this works for you. Thanks.
I have updated this web page for the real trick to make iMovie recording at 16:9, please take a look. Thanks.
DeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteI have OSX 10.8 and iMovie 09.
WSiE tells me it cannot find iMovies installed.
Am i doing something wrong?
Thanx
WSiE supports iMovie '11 only, it listed as one of the requirements. Sorry about that.
DeleteHi there, I am trying to get my new webcam to work. It is a Logitech HD Webcam c525 and I want to record in iMovie '11 using this device. It will not let me choose it as the camera option. HELP! Is there software I need to download? I just tried to download up there and it says there are no webcam settings on my computer and it wouldn't work. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteWSiE is designed for my existing Webcam Settings app customer. You may consider to purchase Webcam Settings on the Mac App Store, thank you.
DeleteWonderful program! Thank you. I just downloaded Webcam settings and using it with Logitech C920. It all works expect that the Pan and Tilt do nothing. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteThe Zoom, Pan and Tilt on Logitech C920 works while it's running at lower resolutions. You can find resolutions and zoom steps supported by C920 on this page.

All I can say is Awesome and Thanks!! The app and enabler both work perfect and took about 10 seconds to install.
ReplyDeleteHi. I want to film in iMovie with my new Logitech C920 webcam. So we purchased both WSiE and Webcam Settings. I can see the Enabler as a hard disk in my iMovie '11, but not as a webcamera to be selected. Only the built-in is working as previously. We can only use the new camera in Photobooth, but not in iMovoe (or Quicktime, for that matter). PLEASE can you help with the new camera? We have OSX 10.9 Mavericks. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteYou can use "QuickTime Player" to record video. It is pre-installed in your Mac OS X and you can find it in your /Applications folder.
DeletePlease follow these steps to record video with QuickTime Player.
1. Connect the Logitech C920 to your Mac and launch QuickTime Player.
2. From QuickTime Player's menu, select File -> New Movie Recording.
3. You should see a movie preview window showing video from your C920 or your built-in camera.
4. On the right bottom corner there is a small triangle, click it to bring up the popup menu, here you can choose your camera (one of them should be C920) and microphone.
5. There are 3 Quality options which gives you different video recording resolution/quality.
6. Click the red button to start your recording and click the stop button to finish recording.
Please let me know if these steps works for you. Thank you very much.
Thank you very much for the suggestion of using QuickTime. I had no idea it could do that.
ReplyDeleteHi mactaris, I am using a Microsoft Lifecam HD webcam and still do not have the option to use this camera in iMovie 11. When I installed WSiE, I get the message: "Webcam Settings cannot be found on this Mac. WSiE is designed for Webcam Settings users only." I have been having a lot of trouble to simply use this camera in iMovie and am hoping I can get this resolved here. Thank you
ReplyDeleteWSiE is designed for my Webcam Settings customers which is why it's looking for Webcam Settings before running.
DeleteI'm using a Logitech C615, I have Webcam Settings installed, I've downloaded and run this App. I'm on OS X 10.9.1, running (& restarted) iMovie 10.0.1, iMovie enabler says UVC Cameras are enabled, I restarted my Mac... sorry, can't get the camera to show up in iMovie.
ReplyDeleteSeems to be working for a lot of people... please let me know what I'm missing. Thank you.
The latest version of iMovie (iMovie 10.0) is very different from iMovie 9.0 and Apple seems canceled external USB webcam support.
DeleteI spend quite some time trying to find a way to re-enable that but totally no luck :(
Sorry to let know WSiE cannot support iMovie 10.0 until Apple puts external USB camera support back or I can find any other hack.
I am really sorry about that.
I really appreciate your prompt reply. I still like having your Webcam Settings App: it is working well and adds functionality to the C615.
DeleteI have iMovie 10 as well...iMovie 10 supports recording from the built-in Face Time camera and also from a USB connected iPhone / iPad / iTouch...So I don't see how it's able to do that if they actually did disable external USB camera recording. The Webcam Settings iMovie Enabler obv. doesn't work though. Any ideas?
DeleteMactaris I download yor webcam setting app and I tried to instal the imovie plugin but the OS doesn´t allow this. It says that the app is from an unknow developer. Help please!
ReplyDeletePlease try right-click on the MSiE and select "Open", Mac OS X will allow you to run it.
DeleteI have a Microsoft LifeCam Studio and have installed the Webcam Settings app successfully. However, I am not able to install WSIE because I do not have iMovie installed. Because this is a corporate computer, I don't believe I can install it. Is there some other mechanism for getting the plug-in installed? Thanks.

Hi,
ReplyDeleteI just purchased a Logitech HD Pro Webcam C920, WebCam Settings, and WSiE. I have them all installed, but unfortunately iMovie (v10.0.6) still only shows my internal iSight camera. Does WSiE work with the latest version of iMovie? Am I doing something wrong? I am running OS X Mavericks 10.10.1. Thanks!
Have you tested WSiE with the latest Mac OS Yosemite ? I have not been able to get MacPro to recognize the LifeCam Studion USB camera ?
ReplyDeleteExactly the same problem as bart . I can't see my HD Pro Webcam C920 in Imovie with WebCam Settings, and WSiE installed
ReplyDeleteI can seem get this two work. I'm running Sierra 10.12.4 with iMovie 10.1.5
