  2. The camera hardware itself is the one actually decides what settings it can support.

Webcam Settings communicates with the camera to find out supported control on the camera and enables those controls on the UI.

iSight and FaceTime/FaceTime HD does not support focus, zoom, pan and tilt. I personally have 3 cameras support these controls - Microsoft LifeCam Studio, Logitech HD Webcam C615 and Logitech HD Pro Webcam C910; all 3 are true HD 1080P camera.

Looks like only high-end cameras support these controls and your Agent V5 full HD seems to be a high-end camera with comparable spec. I am sorry you cannot use these controls on your camera. If you decide not to use Webcam Settings, can you ask Apple to refund? If you have trouble asking Apple to refund, please email me at mactaris[at]mac.com and we can work out some way.

I will try to make this situation more clear to customers in my product descriptions (and try not to alarm Apple review guys by mentioning Microsoft product on Mac App Store :)

Hope I answered your question, and let me know if you need any further assistance.

    2. Hi,

I am on the fence about purchasing this product. From my research so far, it appears that it works with the MS Lifecam Studio 1080p camera. Do you know if it will work with google hangout video chat?

      Thanks,

  3. Hi, I am looking to get this as it is likely going to be saving me a good 89 bucks that I just spent last week on a new Logitech webcam, which, after purchasing, I realized doesn't offer any more manual control than my Microsoft Cinema. Does this app support the camera in widescreen mode? I will purchase this software regardless of whether or not it does, because while my webcam works it is overexposed and Microsoft isn't nice enough to make or software for iOS, I was just wondering.

Also, I figured you were the best person to ask, do you have any clue why it seems that virtually no one just flat out offers webcams with manual controls for macs? I recently transferred over from Windows for school and I've been absolutely astounded that things that I thought were just... standard to include (like exposure and focus, on my Lifecam Cinema). Thanks so much for contributing this product. It's simple, to the point, and just what I need.

  4. Victoria, I will try my best to answer your questions. You know I am just a developer which happens to know a bit more about USB Cameras because I have been involved with several clients developing different types of USB cameras. Please take my answer as personal opinions.

First of all, Webcam Settings provides manual settings for UVC cameras. Settings means video quality control like brightness, contrast these kinds of things. It also provides other advanced control such as focus, zoom, pan and tilt on some hi-end cameras.

The Widescreen mode you are talking about is video streams coming out of the camera, which is not under the scope of Webcam Settings. The reason is your video app or webcam app is actually the one, which is receiving video streams from the webcam. That app generally controls what kind of video formats and size it wants handle to produce a still image, a video recording or simply video previews user sees on the screen.

It is actually possible for Webcam Settings to try to manipulate video format or size from outside the webcam app. Problem is the webcam app may not be able to accept and handle different format or size of video stream. I am still thinking of a better way to help people deal with this issue. One possibility is for me to develop a video recording app and support format/size switch inside this app. I actually have a prototype of such an app but am facing some tough decisions and haven’t made any yet.

Your second question a big one that makes all of us wonders why all the time. On the very surface, Logitech will tell you it’s Apple’s fault not providing any manual control over Apple supplied UVC camera driver. All those cameras we can buy on the market that can be plug to a Mac and just work without install any driver is because Apple preinstalled a standard UVC camera driver inside OS X. This driver is based on a new architecture and the new architecture has been in development for several years and not quite complete yet. My guess is Apple will eventually provide general camera settings when the new architecture is more completed. But Apple been Apple, they don’t like to release immature functions until everything is well though thru. Even this means several years of waiting for users and developers.

In more technical terms, Apple is transiting from 20 years old QuickTime architecture (Audio/Video technology standards on Mac) to a more modern, object oriented architecture. In the mean time they are transiting from 32bit world to 64bit world. Plus take in count iOS is part of the plan that in needs and ultimately affects the whole transition process.

There are too much to talk about on this topic. Hope my “brief answer” gives you some idea of the whole situation.

  5. Hi again! Thanks for your response, by the way, it really helped. I purchased this app today and it worked great, did exactly what I wanted it to do, then after I quit it for the first time, it wont reopen. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling it. Have you encountered this before, or do you have any basic steps I can go through to try and restore it? It worked great, but after I quit it once it must have had its feelings hurt because it wont start up again.

    1. Apps like FaceTime, Photo Booth and QuickTime Player are using newer technology and they seems play nicely with other app. They will not reset the webcam when launch.
Apps like Skype using older technology will reset the webcam when launch. This behavior probably cannot be changed by Webcam Settings.

Webcam Settings as and Mac App Store app, is required to be sandboxed since 1 June. This makes thing even more difficult.

One way to help user deal with the reset issue is to add save presets function. This should allow users to load and apply pre-defined preset by a simple click. Although this is still a manual procedure, I hope it can be an acceptable solution for you.

Please email me if you wish to discuss any further. I would very much like to come up with a good solution for this and may also need your help for pre-release testing.

      Delete
    2. Wanted to reply and say that presets seems like an excellent way to solve this! Would also be great for users like me who might use the camera in different lighting conditions and want to change things on the fly. For instance going from an incendescent lighted room to a sunlit room. Being able to just click a preset for this rather than manually set each variable would be great. So this would solve two issues if implemented.

    3. Preset feature has been added since version 1.1, please let me know if there is something I can improve. Can you send me an email at mactaris@mac.com? Thanks.

  11. Gents:

You really should provide a free version that works for 24 hours or 5 launches or something like that. Sure its only 8 bucks but given the variety of camera's etc, I (and I suspect not a few others) simply aren't going to roll the dice on 8 bucks for something that may turn out to be a useless brick with their camera.

I'd love to buy this. But not before I get a chance to see if it works for me.

I did notice one issue. After using the program for a about an hour (I don't know if this a time dependent issue.) the auto focus goes to infinity and everything in my booth is out of focus. The work around for me is that I go to manual focus, the inside of the booth is only 5'X5' so it works. But others might not be so lucky.

  17. I have a Logitech C615, and it will only produce reversed images. I'm not sure why Logitech does this (I can guess), but it would be nice if we can also have an un-reversed image. Holding up something to the camera that contains text can be somewhat embarrassing. Photo Booth can reverse the image, but other apps cannot. I don't know if the C615 has a simple setting for this (and whether UVC can do it), but if it does, then that would be a very nice feature to have available.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Logitech C615 produce un-reversed images like all other cameras (tested with built-in iSight, Microsoft LifeCam Studio and other Logitech cameras). It's the software doing the reverse trick. In my test, normal app like QuickTime Player X, QuickTime Player 7 and my own test app. They all produce un-reversed images.

Photo Booth, FaceTime, Skype and maybe others, they produce reversed images. I don't know why they choose to do it this way.

I checked UVC specification and found no standard control for Mirror or Flip image settings. These are very advanced settings usually supplied by vendor specific Extension Unit or done be the driver in software manner.

Webcam Settings is only an app and will not be able to provide this feature. Maybe you can consider iGalsses, it's a driver level solution and provide the mirror feature you need.

  18. Hi There!

I have a Logitech Quickcam Orbit AF, which has an awesome pan, tilt, and direction control on the Windows side, but I use my Mac for most video conferencing. I wanted a way to be able to control the actual camera while it's in use for video conferencing, so that I can pan around the room and look up and down if needed. Will the Webcam Settings App allow me to do this? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Logitech Quickcam Orbit AF is not using standard UVC settings to control pan and tilt. It is using vendor specific Extension Units to control those settings.

I was originally developing an app to control Logitech Quickcam Orbit AF; it does exactly what you want. But I cannot figure out a way to get it on Mac App Store. So I let the app sit in my HD for more than one year.

Finally I decided to remove Orbit AF specific feature and it became Webcam Settings now.

  19. This app looks like it really does what I need. Right now I use iGlasses 3 which works the same way and I really like it because settings are saved and it can be used as your default camera for FT, Photo Booth, Skype, etc. The one thing I hate about it is that it shoots photos and records in 640 x 426 resolution, whereas my built-in cam is 1080 x 720.

So my first question is, does Webcam Settings dumb down the resolution of the built-in cam or does it retain HD quality? Are settings saved? And what is the difference between Site Control and Webcam Settings?

I would really like to purchase this but if it does happen to be less of what I've been looking for, I wouldn't be too happy. I wish there was some kind of trial or free version to test it out.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 1. Webcam Settings does not affect camera resolutions. You don't need to choose other video source; all video apps work the way they are now. Webcam Settings is intended to work like sliders and buttons equipped on the camera itself, change these settings simply affect the "quality" of your video.

      2. Currently version 1.0 does not support save settings. Version 1.1 will support this feature and it will be in beta soon. If you would send me an email at mactaris@mac.com, I will include you in my beta tester list.

      3. Sight Control supports Apple's built-in cameras only and Webcam Settings supports all UVC cameras. In your case you will need Webcam Settings.

Sorry there is no trial or demo version yet. Right now I am devoting all my time developing the new version, after version 1.1 is completed I will come back to make a demo version.

  24. Hi Mactaris,

Just bought the app to get my C920 running with Istopmotion. Unfortunately my experience is it to be is really "buggy". The only thing that's "working" for me now is "Manual Focus" and "Power Line frequency". Except when i hide the panel, then it suddenly wants to autofocus again.

From within Istopmotion the saturation, brightness, contrast and sharpness DO work? But not from the "Webcam Settings" panel, it does nothing.

I expected a little less trouble, because people like 8thNote say it works like a charm!?

Hope version 1.1 will solve this, cause for now i can't use it at all for what i bought it for. Focus, exposure and whitebalance have to be manual and stable for stopmotion. They aren't...

Open Web Cam Settings. Should be able to adjust contrast etc.

    Logitech Broadcaster webcam.

Since it's a wifi webcam it isn't supported out of the box

    1. Dear Thomas,

I am afraid that's not possible. Logitech Broadcaster webcam is not an UVC camera. It's controlled by Logitech's custom made driver.

Unlike other Logitech UVC cameras which are controlled by Apple's UVC class driver, Logitech has full control over Broadcaster webcam. There is no reason why they cannot provide camera settings for this product on Mac.

One of my client has a similar wireless camera which I built driver for. They do support camera settings through app -> custom made driver -> wireless module ->the camera hardware. And the camera settings support is part of the product plan in the beginning with. I would expect Logitech to do the same while planning their Mac specific product...

  34. Hi,

I just found & purchased WebCam Settings. What a great app! Thanks.

I used to use iGlasses for similar manual control but I'm switching over to WebCam Settings. I have a Logitech C910 and will soon get a C920. Hopefully I can use them both.

Would like to mention one app I use together with yours: CamTwist (free). One problem I've had with webcams is image size/resolution. The Logitech cams are terrific hardware and are capable of very high resulution, e.g. 1080p 1920 x 1080. Often this is more than desired. Here's where CamTwist helps out. In CamTwist you can choose a different resolution such as 1280x720 (720p) or 720x480 (480p at 3:2 aspect ratio). This reduces the amount of data (and increases frame rates) for streaming (e.g. Google+ Hangouts) or recording video. (I like Debut for recording video - not too complicated, not too expensive.)

I'm not associated with CamTwist in any way. It's just something I found some time back while scouring the web. It does lots of other things and can be a little confusing to use & set up, but by offering that one image size/resolution choice it's well worth the trouble. And together with WebCam Settings for manual focus control, etc. it's a great combination.

I don't know if you could get similar image size/resolution control into a future version of WebCam Settings. If so, your app would then do everything I need on a Mac webcam app!

My setup is OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on a fairly zippy hackintosh system (Intel I3 3+GHz, 8 GB RAM, GeForce GTS 250 Graphics).

  36. Hi,

I'm using Webcam Settings with two cams simultaneously - a Logitech C910 and a C920. This works because the cams are plugged into separate USB busses (not just separate ports). The busses are both listed as "USB High-Speed Bus" (i.e. USB 2.0) on Snow Leopard's 'System Profiler.' I switch between the cams using the app CamTwist.

Your Webcam Settings app works nicely & stores the settings for both cams, even when they're different. To adjust settings I switch from one to the other with the popup menu at the top of your Webcam Settings Panel. Right now both cams read "Logitech Camera" in the popup menu. I have to remember which one is in the first & second position to select that camera & change settings.

So, a welcome change would be if these two cams were identified differently in the popup menu. Thanks for the great app!.

    1. The Zoom, Pan and Tilt function on C920 is actually tight to its resolution. Please check this webpage,
      http://mactaris.blogspot.tw/2012/05/logitech-hd-pro-webcam-c920.html

At maximum resolution (1920 x 1080), C920 only allows zoom values of 100 ~ 120. In this situation Pan and Tilt ranges are really small and maybe not noticeable.
If you use C920 in FaceTime, you will notice the zoom range is wider. Pan and Tilt ranges are also wider in this app.

I am thinking of adding a preview window in Webcam Settings which allows users to change camera resolution. The zoom, pan and tilt functions will be more noticeable in different resolutions.

  45. Mactaris. I use a ASUS monitor with my MBP laptop. The USB camera in the monitor is supposed to be PNP for Mac, but it is not. Web posts show many mac owners have the same problem. In sum, there is no reliable / complete camera driver in Mac OSX to run the camera properly.

One current solution is a combination of software CamTwist and/or iGlasses. For me, neither solution is great...

I wonder if WebCam settings **could** serve as the driver of sorts.

Before I purchased, I wonder if you have any experience with either this issue or anything similar that might prompt me to buy this? I know this is a toughie to answer so feel free to punt, but I thought it worth a try.

  56. Hi, I'm hoping to capture video with 3 HD webcams (maybe C920's?) simultaneously on a 1 year old iMac, and on a tight budget.

Can this be done, and if so, could you advise on what software will be needed, etc.?

    Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. To capture 3 HD webcams simultaneously, you have to overcome several technical barriers.

      1. USB bandwidth, every HD webcam will eat up almost all bandwidth on a USB bus, therefore you will need a Mac with 3 USB ports and 3 independent USB buses. You can check System Information, Hardware > USB to find how many buses you have on your iMac.

      2. Software to record video, not sure which one can record 3 video simultaneously, but it shouldn't be difficult to use 3 apps to record one each.

      3. While recording all three, you may not be able to achieve high frame rate if all three are using H.264 encoding if your iMac is not powerful enough. Another option is to record in Photo JPEG format but this will require huge hard drive space and you need to make sure the hard drive is fast enough to handle 3 video stream. If you can accept lower resolution say 720p, the hardware requirement is probably not that bad and iMac could be able to do that.

You can email me directly if you like to discuss more in detail. Thank you very much.

      Delete
    2. Thank you! Next step for me: check those buses.

    2. Aha - this appears to have gotten rid of the problem. HOWEVER! When I do a Hangout On Air, and I screenshare, my camera switches off while I display something on my desktop. WHen I come back to my camera, I lose the settings that WebCam Settings had applied. THis is why I had "Writer every setting to webcam" set to every .5 seconds so that when I switched back, the color would be balanced again. I guess I can try every 1 or 2 seconds and see if that stops the lag/extreme motion blur. Does this make sense?? THX

      Delete
    3. Yes, The option "Writer every setting to webcam" is designed to solve the lose settings issue on certain conditions.

Writing settings in every 0.5 seconds shouldn't be an issue normally, but some camera may not be able to process USB commands fast enough. This is maybe the reason why you are experiencing video lag. Please try different time intervals to find out which one works best with your camera.

Can you tell me which camera you are using and which app you are experiencing video lag? I would like to run some tests as well. Thanks.

  63. Question before purchasing your App. It looks like I will be able to select the builtin facetime camera, or an external USB Camera (I have the Logitech C910 and C920) as the primary camera. 1. As far as I know, there is no way to set a primary camera on Mac OS X. You will need to choose which camera to use in the video app (every video app allows you to choose which camera to use). For Skype, select "Preferences..," from Skype menu and select "Audio/Video" tab, you can then select HD Pro Webcam C920 from the Camera drop down menu.

On the other hand, you CAN set a primary microphone by simply select HD Pro Webcam C920 as Input device in System Preferences -> Sound panel.

    1. For Skype, it does support HD mode (720p) on Mac. If Skype decides you have enough bandwidth and capable hardware, it will switch from SD mode to HD mode in about 1 minute after you starts video call.

FaceTime certainly support HD video call, check this link for requirements,

      HD Hangouts requirement is here,

I don't see anywhere is says Mac won't do it.

When Skype switch from SD to HD, you will notice the video ratio switched from 4:3 to 16:9.

Can you share the link where you saw Mac is broadcasting at less then HD? We may be help clear up there rumors :)

  69. Hello,

After much research that suggested that a great many webcams will not work with Mavericks, I found specs for the Logitech C930E, which state compatibility with OS 10.7 and greater. I bought one today, and it works just fine out of the box, on all apps that support a webcam.

Logitech offers a camera control app (Logitech Camera Settings), which I have installed, and it does provide some control. I have looked at the functionality provided by your product, Webcam Settings, and am having difficulty identifying the benefits of your product over the Logitech app.

Please tell me the benefits of Webcam Settings over Logitech Camera Settings.

Webcam Settings provides profile management feature that many users find it useful to deal with different lighting situation. The menubar app design of Webcam Settings make it more user friendly to work with other video apps.

If Logitech Camera Settings app has all the features you need, that's great. I hope to keep develop my app and make it more useful to every Mac webcam user.

    1. #1 Yes, the zoom function for C910 is based on the resolution. If you preview video at lower resolution, it can provide greater zoom level. And if you are previewing at maximum resolution, there won't be any zoom function.

Newer Logitech webcam such as C930 on the other hand does provide digital zoom. Even at highest resolution it can still provide 5X zoom.

All of these are digital zoom or digital manipulation, so far I not aware of any consumer level webcam is equipped with mechanical zoom.

  79. Hi !

    I've been using CameraSettings with a Logitech C920 in OSx 10.9.1 .

I would like to know if is there any way to know at which framerate the camera is capturing and giving frames to the apps ...

I'm working with Openframeworks.cc development framework and i would like to know if it's possible to set a fixed framerate for the camera C920. Do you have any debug information that can tell the user at which framerate is the camera capturing ?

Why in the 920C there is no capture fps option ? There is not such parameter on this camera ? As far as i remember the 910 did had such control ...

Any answer would be very appreciated ...

  84. Hi,

I have the LifeCam Studio webcam and have been using your app with tremendous success. However, recently Apple put out an update for Maverick and ever since has cause intermittent issues with my MBP and webcam. My laptop will not always recognize the webcam. I took this in to Apple and they reset browser and flushed out the extensions. It worked but then started have issues again.

In your opinion, is this related to the OS, webcam, or maybe an update that might be needed on your app? Nobody seems to have the answer.

    Thanks.

  87. Hi,
I am using "webcam settings" on a Macbook pro 2014 with Yosemite.
How to load profile on startup. Option is greyed out.
    Thanks

    ReplyDelete

    1. You can create a new profile by clicking "Save New Profile" button. Select the newly created profile from the popup menu and the "Load at Start" button will be enabled.

This will tell Webcam Settings to load a specific profile when the app is launched.

To launch Webcam Settings on startup, please goto "System Preference" -> "Users & Groups" -> "Login Items" in your current user. Click the "+" button and choose "Webcam Settings" app as a startup item.

This will let OS X launch Webcam Setting on startup and the app will load your profile.

  88. I'm using Mac OS 10.9.5 (Mavericks) with Webcam Settings 2.3, Microsoft Lifecam Studio (model Q2F00013) and Firefox 34.0.5. I typically work with two different websites that both use Flashplayer 16.0.0.235.

The camera works properly with Webcam Settings on the first website, but even if I close the browser completely, reopen and then open the second website, an error message "camera is busy or broken" appears. Then if I go back to the first website, only a black box displays, so it doesn't work there anymore either.

The only way I've been able to resolve is turning off the computer and then turning it back on. A regular "restart" doesn't fix the problem.

I have read through the Adobe Flashplayer bug reports, but didn't see any mention of this issue. Do you think it could have something to do with Webcam Settings, or would you recommend any ways to troubleshoot?

Also, this wasn't an issue until the last couple of months. Before that, it worked ok on both sites, though sometimes the second one would display everything in purple. Unplugging and replugging the webcam fixed that issue though. So I'm wondering if this new problem might be caused by a new version of Flashplayer?

Other than this issue, Webcam Settings works very well and I'm happy with it.

  89. Useless for me.
    Machine: Mac mini
    OS: 10.10.1
    WebCam: Logitech C615

With Webcam Settings app running (menu shows in the top right corner) photobooth shows "no camera connected", as soon as I quit WS, photobooth recognizes the camera. No way to make changes on the fly, no way to get WS running at the same time as photobooth.

  99. Since upgrading to 10.8.5, all buttons and controls have stop responding. And values for the controls are replaced with bizarrely high numbers. For example, Focus now has "62,997" for both high and low values, and can not be changed. It has no effect on the webcam itself. Is there a preferences file to throw out or something else like that? I can't find anything in the preferences folder

  112. Dear,

I just received an "endoscopy" USB HD camera with embedded LEDs. The drivers are made for Windows only (that I don't have to make a try). However, this external video camera is plug&play on my iMac (OSX10.12.x) and I can capture the video via Photo booth and FaceTime. Unfortunately the video quality is quite poor, and I can't change any camera setup (exposure, video definition (HD), sharpness, contrast, etc..

Before buying this application, I was looking for any thoughts or experiences with such external video camera or similar.

    thank you in advance, yves

  113. I have been a long time user of Webcam Settings - great program. Problem is I just upgraded to a new Macbook Pro (late 2016), on OS X 10.12.2, and Webcam Settings no longer is able to control my camera.

Is there perhaps something about the new Macbook or OS 10.12 that breaks working with webcam settings?

  114. Thanks for the app!

I have a question about the Logitech Quickcam Pro for Mac (model: V-UBM46). I'm interested in taking still photos at the highest resolution possible. The only app I can find mention of to do this on a Mac is Photo Booth. But Photo Booth photos with my Quickcam always end up at 800x533 pixel resolution.

Is there any way to take a still photo on a Mac with my Quickcam Vision Pro at maximum resolution, which I believe is 1600x1200? Is there a way for Webcam Settings force this? (I don't want to pan or tilt.)

    thanks for your help.

  115. I just bought this app. I have Logitech Brio and when I use manual white balance, I have huge problem. When I open any app, image from camera is blue. I have to change WB a little bit, or turn on and turn off auto WB and then is okay. I have to do this every time when I want to use camera. If I load different profile in Webcam Settings app in preview window is the same - blue screen, then I have to change WB little bit and it's okay again. Please repair this
